ACTUALLY, the term was APPROPRIATED. it originally was used to describe BLACK YOUTHS OF THE JAZZ CULTURE. it stemmed from “hep cat” to “hepster” to “hipster.”
the definition of what a hipster is changed so much throughout the coining but all in all: WHITE PEOPLE APPROPRIATED THE TERM AND THE CULTURE.

But did they take it if we just pretty much let them have it? We can quote Lil Wayne lyrics but don’t know our own history… We need to stop being blind to our own history that way no one can take it, borrow it, appropriate it, etc.
